Q. What is Faxability / Distinctive Rings?
A. Is a function of your unit that allows a person with one telephone line to receive fax
and voice calls through two different phone numbers on that one line. One number is assigned as the fax line number and the other
number is assigned as the voice line number. Each number is then given its own distinctive ring pattern allowing the type of incoming
call (voice or fax) to be identified by its specific ring. In order to use the Distinctive Ring feature with the unit, you must subscribe
for Distinctive Ring service through the local telephone company. Once you have subscribed to the local telephone company for this
service, the machine will then need to be programmed to recognize the ring pattern assigned to the fax number.
A. When the answer mode is set in the F/T mode (Fax/Tel), the machine automatically answers every call upon completion of the Ring Delay (unless you answer first). Once the machine answers the call, it will determine if it is a fax or a telephone (voice) call by listening for fax tones (CNG). If your Brother machine hears these tones, it will receive the fax. If the unit does not hear any fax tones, it will assume it is a telephone (voice) call and will alert you to the call with a pseudo-ring/ double-ring.
The length of time that the "special" ring
tones occur is called the F/T Ring Time. If you answer the call using the handset during the pseudo-ring/ double ring time and it
is a voice call, press the Stop/Exit key on the control panel to release the call. If you answer on the handset and hear fax tones
(CNG) press the Start key to receive the fax. If you answer the call from an extension phone during the pseudo-rings/ double-ring
time and it is a voice call, press the telephone answer code (#91 for New Zealand) to release the call from the machine. If you hear
fax tones (CNG) or silence, press the fax receive code (*91 for
Q. How does the "FAX/TEL" Mode work on Brother fax machine?
A. The F/T Mode is used to allow the fax machine and the telephones to
share the same telephone line. When a call comes in, the fax machine and all extension telephones on that line will ring according
to the number of rings you have set for the Ring Delay.
When the Ring Delay is completed, the fax machine will answer the call and
determine if it is a fax call or a telephone (voice) call.
The fax machine can determine this by the signal it is receiving on the
telephone line. If someone is sending a fax automatically, the sending fax machine will transmit a fax tone (a series of beeps every
3 seconds).
If your fax machine hears these tones, it will receive the fax. If the fax machine does not hear any fax tones, it assumes
it is a telephone (voice) call and will begin ringing the F/T ring tones (double ring) for the length of time you selected for the
F/T Ring Time. These tones will only ring on the fax machine's handset (extension or external phones will not ring). At the end of
the F/T ring time the fax machine will go into the receive mode in order to receive a manual fax.
(If the call was a voice call and
was not answered, the caller will hear the fax receive tones also).
Q. Why my sent faxes or the copied documents are always received or copied with a black vertical line down the page?
A. This type
of line is typically caused by dirt or white out on the scanner unit. The scanner unit is the mechanism that reads the documents that
are being sent or copied. This problem is usually resolved by cleaning the white film and the scanner glass strip with isopropyl alcohol,
and a lint-free cloth.
Please call us for more details on how to clean the scanner unit for a specific machine.
A. Paper used in laser printers which feed paper short edge should
always be long grain (all laser and copier grade paper is long grain). If short grain paper is used in any laser printer then the
paper will curl badly and will cause jamming if you are duplexing. The FS-7000/+ and FS-9000 feed paper is fed long edge on and can
therefore use A4 short grain.
Many people produce A5 paper by cutting long grain A4 in half. This makes the A5 effectively short grain
which will cause problems. When purchasing A5 paper it is important to ensure that it is also long grain.
Make sure you always have sufficient cartridges on hand. This way, you can take advantage
of the full functionality of your brother machine, at all times.
